Biography

Dr. Leena Amiri is a distinguished licensed Psychiatrist and Assistant Professor in the UAE University (UAEU) with over two decades of experience in Psychiatry and Mental Health care. Her subspecialty in Child & Adult Psychiatry with focus on Behavioural Science Module, clinical bedside teaching and interacting with medical students in the teaching realms allowed her exposure to different areas within the field of mental and psychological wellbeing.
Dr. Amiri is a fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (FRCPsych) from the University of Toronto, Canada, where she attained 5-year residency training with specialization in Child & Adult Psychiatry. Prior to this, she completed her bachelor’s degree in medicine and surgery (MBBS) from the UAEU College of Medicine & Health Sciences (CMHS), where she later rejoined as an Assistant Professor.

Upon her joining the Department of Psychology in UAEU, she conducted lectures to both pre-clinical and clinical years and was involved in clinical bedside teaching of residents who were preparing for the Arab Board of Health Specialization (ABHS). Focusing on developmental psychiatry and evidence-based treatment, Dr. Amiri provided the medical students with the required skills and knowledge to conquer the challenges.

During her teaching years, she was also the coordinator of the Clinical Clerkship Program. She continued taking on this role during the challenging time of the pandemic - covid-19, where she conducted adjustments to the curriculums to accommodate distant learning by improvising the delivery modality and finding bedside teaching alternatives. This proved to be an accelerator to her professional growth and a reflection of her impeccable responsibility. Following this role, Dr. Amiri became the coordinator of the Behavioural Science Module. A step she took with the intention of linking the clerkship to the module as a continuum.

Inspired by being part of the teaching board in the UAEU, Dr. Leena developed more passion towards assisting medical students and alumnus throughout their journeys. Therefore, she occupied the role of Co-chair in the Internship Program coordinating medical internships at CMHS. Addressing her first administrative role, she held the role of Chair of Alumni Affairs for medial graduates UAEU. Her extensive efforts prepared her to be announced as the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, where she was directly engaged in the medical student’s well-being while facilitating and supervising extracurricular college-related activities.

Dr. Amiri’s academical contributions expand to the research work. With over 13 peer-reviewed publications in the local and international scientific journals, she excelled in conducting multidisciplinary research papers reflecting her interests in psychiatry, medical education, public health and artificial intelligence.
Aside from her contributions in the educational field, Dr. Amiri plays a pivotal role as an active member in the Quality of Life and Sustainable Development Committee in the Ministry of Health & Prevention. Her role includes participating in policymaking for health and wellness and emphasizing sustainable development goals within healthcare practices across the Emirates.

Dr. Leena Amiri runs a weekly Child & Adolescent Clinic where she assesses and manages patients with mental health challenges. Additionally, she possesses the role of reviewer in the journal of Child Abuse & Neglect, where she leverages her accumulative expertise to induce a better scientific sphere and to enhance the psychological wellbeing among who in-need, naming students, employees, and more!
